Das
Projekt Machine Learning City des in Berlin ansässigen
Medienkünstlers Adam Harvey (US) wird eigens für das ELEVATE
Festival 2018 produziert. Harvey forscht seit Jahren an den
gesellschaftlichen Auswirkungen vernetzter
Datenanalysetechnologien. Einen Fokus richtet er dabei auf
digitale Bildtechnologien, wie sie etwa in Überwachungskameras
mit Gesichtserkennung zum Einsatz kommen. Sein in Graz
realisiertes Projekt Machine Learning City widmet sich
der Frage nach dem Recht am eigenen Bild im Kontext urbaner
Diskurse wie Überwachung, öffentlicher Raum und
Digitalisierung. Für das Elevate Festival konzipiert
Harvey eine auf Graz bezogene interaktive und multimediale
Ausstellung.

How Cities and
Citizens Becoming Machine Learnable Datasets
Lecture mit Adam Harvey in englischer

This talk will present the Machine Learning City exhibition.
Can a city become a dataset? And if so, what influence could it
have on the future of artificial intelligence? Machine
Learning City explores this topic through the unique
story of the Graz pedestrian dataset, one of the most widely
used image datasets for training pedestrian detection
algorithms. This talk will survey current trends in computer
vision, surveillance, and image datasets from around the world.

The project Machine Learning City by Berlin-based media artist Adam Harvey (US) will be produced specifically
for the ELEVATE Festival 2018. Harvey has been researching
the social impact of networked data analysis technologies
for years. He focuses on digital imaging technologies such
as those used in surveillance cameras with face recognition.
The project Machine Learning City deals with the
issue surrounding the right to one’s own image in the
context of urban discourses such as surveillance, public
space, and digitization. For the ELEVATE Festival, he
conceived an interactive multimedia exhibition related to
Graz.
