Wüste der Wirklichkeiten
Mit Wüste
der Wirklichkeiten überschreibt
das esc medien kunst labor den
Programmentwurf für 2023. Damit
sollen die für dieses Jahr
geplanten Präsentationen,
Entwicklungen und
Theorie-Veranstaltungen
konturiert und kommuniziert
werden.
Der Titel
zitiert eine Szene im ersten,
1999 erschienenen Teil der
Matrix-Quadrologie der
Wachowskis, worin zwei
Realitäten konfrontiert werden.
Die eine gleicht der, die das
Publikum als die ihre erkennt,
mit der es sich mehr oder
weniger arrangiert hat; diese
stellt der Film als ein
allumfassendes Simulacrum, als
die Matrix vor. Die andere
Realität wird als die Wüste der
Wirklichkeit apostrophiert,
diese ist im Unterschied zur
allgemeinen
Erfahrungswirklichkeit eine
apokalyptische Ruinenlandschaft.
Dabei verweist die Szene
zugleich auf die Simulation
(durch den aus ihr heraus sich
auftuenden Blick wird der
Unterschied evident) und eine
Realität, die beansprucht,
wirklicher zu sein, indem sie
erschüttert und durch die
Vorstellung, diese Realität
erleiden zu müssen.
Die
Dualität Wirklichkeit/Fiktion
bzw. Simulation hat besonders
vor der Jahrtausendwende
kulturtheoretische
Aufmerksamkeit erhalten. Wir
nehmen sie wieder in den Blick –
heute
mit Fokus auf die Realität der vormals oft nur spekulativ, theoretisch und extrapolierend, vielfach als Vorschein angesprochenen Verhältnisse und Dinge – etwa auf realisierte Systeme der Künstlichen Intelligenz und deren breite Anwendung sowie aktuelle gesellschaftliche Entwicklungen, die eine Wüstenbildung befeuern.
mit Fokus auf die Realität der vormals oft nur spekulativ, theoretisch und extrapolierend, vielfach als Vorschein angesprochenen Verhältnisse und Dinge – etwa auf realisierte Systeme der Künstlichen Intelligenz und deren breite Anwendung sowie aktuelle gesellschaftliche Entwicklungen, die eine Wüstenbildung befeuern.
Digitale
Infrastrukturen und vernetzte
Technologien sind längst Alltag
geworden, durchdringen nahezu
sämtliche Lebensbereiche. Die
Welt scheint berechenbar, unser
Körper und unser Handeln
codierbar. Bereitwillig werden
Verantwortung und Kompetenzen
Maschinen (ausgestattet mit
selbstlernenden Programmen)
überantwortet, deren
Funktionsweisen – quasi im
Gegenzug – sukzessive in unserem
Körper und in unserem
Bewusstsein ebenso wie in
unseren sozialen Beziehungen
wirksam werden. Eine neue
Dimension dieser Prozesse wurde
erreicht, als wir begonnen
haben, Algorithmen
ethisch-moralische
Entscheidungen zuzubilligen.
Bedrohliche Brisanz gewinnt
diese Entwicklung vor allem
angesichts autonomer Systeme
(z.B. Drohnen), die über
Freiheit und Repression und
sogar über Leben und Tod
entscheiden können.
Mit dem
Programm Wüste der
Wirklichkeiten soll zum
Blick auf politische wie
technische Formate der
„Simulation“ im Licht der
Gegenwart auch ein Blick auf
eine Realität geworfen
werden, wie der Folgen des Klimawandels, der Zerstörung riesiger Landflächen bei der Gewinnung von Rohstoffen, der Verschmutzung der Meere und Seen, von Grundwasser
und Quellen. Ebenso wie in der Zerstörung der Natur hat das Ruinöse und Ruinierte seine Entsprechung in der Erosion sozialer und demokratiepolitischer Errungenschaften.
Aus dieser Perspektive stellt sich die Frage, ob ein Leben, wie es (in Europa) weitgehend als real erfahren und im Glauben an die Möglichkeiten der Partizipation, Entscheidungsfreiheit, soziale Sicherheit, eine halbwegs intakte Umwelt, gesunde Lebensmittel usw. gelebt wird, nicht schon längst einer Art „Matrix“ geschuldet ist.

Erfahrung und das Prinzip
Hoffnung – Wüsten können
temporär und punktuell (wieder)
zum Blühen gebracht werden.

exhibition: Desert
of realities
The matrix is the world that has been put over your eyes,
so that you are blind to the truth. [Morpheus in the movie Matrix]
Desert of realities
Desert of Realities is the title of esc medien kunst labor's draft program for 2023, intended to contour and communicate the presentations, developments, and theoretical events planned for this year.
The title quotes a scene in the first part of the Wachowskis' Matrix Quadrology, published in 1999, in which two realities are confronted. One resembles the one the audience recognizes as theirs, with which they have more or less come to terms; this the film presents as an all-encompassing simulacrum, the Matrix. The other reality is apostrophized as the desert of reality; in contrast to the general reality of experience, this is an apocalyptic landscape of ruins. Thereby the scene refers at the same time to the simulation (by the view opening out of it the difference becomes evident) and a reality which claims to be more real by shaking and by the idea of having to suffer this reality.
The duality reality/fiction or simulation has received cultural theoretical attention especially before the turn of the millennium. We take a look at it again - today with a focus on the reality of what were formerly often only speculative, theoretical and extrapolative, often addressed as appearances - for example, on realized systems of artificial intelligence and their broad application, as well as current social developments that are fueling a desertification.
Digital infrastructures and networked technologies have long since become part of everyday life, permeating almost all areas of life. The world seems predictable, our bodies and actions codable. Responsibility and competencies are willingly handed over to machines (equipped with self-learning programs), whose modes of operation - quasi in return - successively take effect in our bodies and in our consciousness as well as in our social relationships. A new dimension of these processes was reached when we began to grant algorithms ethical-moral decisions. This development gains threatening explosiveness especially in view of autonomous systems (e.g. drones) that can decide about freedom and repression and even about life and death.
With the program Desert of Realities, a look at political as well as technical formats of "simulation" in the light of the present will also be taken at a reality the consequences of climate change, the destruction of vast areas of land for the extraction of raw materials, the pollution of seas and lakes, groundwater and springs.Just as in the destruction of nature, the ruinous and ruined has its counterpart in the erosion of social and democratic achievements. From this perspective, the question arises whether a life as it is largely experienced (in Europe) as real and lived in the belief in the possibilities of participation, freedom of decision, social security, a halfway intact environment, healthy food, etc., has not long been indebted to a kind of "matrix".
The metaphor of the desert allows at the same time the question of "water" and "possibilities of irrigation". Because - this is what experience and the principle of hope say - deserts can be temporarily and selectively (re)brought to bloom.
