wir laden Sie herzlich zur Eröffnung der Ausstellung IN SEARCH
OF LOST PARADISES. IN SEARCH OF UTOPIAS mit Concha Jerez am
Samstag, dem 23.09.2017 ab 18:00 Uhr im Rahmen des
Eröffnungswochenendes des steirischen herbst - Festivals in das
esc medien kunst labor ein!

IN SEARCH OF LOST PARADISES
IN SEARCH
OF UTOPIAS
In Europa wurden besonders zur Zeit der Aufklärung und danach
wichtige Utopien entwickelt – von den sozialen Utopien des 19.
Jahrhunderts bis zu den ökologischen Utopien des 20. Jahrhunderts
– aber im Laufe der Zeit wurden diese transformiert oder gerieten
gänzlich in Vergessenheit. Die permanenten Bedrohungsszenarien der
Gegenwart – die ökonomischen, ökologischen und sozialen
Katastrophen sowie das ungeahnte Ausmaß an Kontrolle und
Manipulation, das die Informations- und Kommunikationstechnologien
des 21. Jahrhunderts ermöglichen – und die damit verbundenen
kontinuierlichen Anstrengungen diese zu bewältigen, lassen uns
scheinbar weder Zeit noch Raum zum Nachdenken über unsere Zukunft.
Angesichts dieser Realität bedarf es systematischer Kritik – nicht
nur an den vorherrschenden Ideen, sondern auch an der Abwesenheit
utopischer Vorstellungen. Es braucht neue, zukunftsfähige Modelle
des gesellschaftlichen Zusammenlebens, in denen wir nach bereits
vorhandenen und noch zu kreierenden Werten leben können. Die
Installation IN SEARCH OF LOST PARADISES.IN SEARCH OF UTOPIAS
widmet sich daher der Suche nach vergessenen, verlorenen oder
möglichen Paradiesen. Bilder aus in der Erinnerung festgehaltenen
Wirklichkeiten, Textfragmente, Spiegelungen, Klänge wie sie von
Menschen aus verschiedenen Ländern, Kulturen und Sprachräumen
gedacht werden – sie alle vereinigen sich zu einem Raunen voller
Menschlichkeit rund um ersehnte Paradiese.

opening weekend of the steirischer herbst festival at esc medien
kunst labor.

IN SEARCH OF LOST PARADISES
IN SEARCH OF UTOPIAS
In Europe, particularly during the Enlightenment
period and afterwards, Utopias were developed – from the social
Utopias of the 19th century to the ecological Utopias of the 20th century – but
over the course of time these were transformed or else
completely forgotten. The constant threat scenarios of the
present day – the economic, ecological and social catastrophes
as well as the unprecedented level of control and manipulation
allowed by the information and communication technologies of the
21st century – and the resulting attempts to manage
these, apparently leave us neither the time nor space to think
about our future. In light of this reality, a systematic
critique is required – not just of prevailing ideas, but also of
the absence of Utopian concepts. We need new, future-oriented
models for societal coexistence in which we can live according
to existing and yet to be formulated values. Thus the
installation IN SEARCH OF LOST PARADISES. IN SEARCH OF
UTOPIAS focuses on the search for forgotten, lost or
possible paradises. Images of realities captured in the memory,
fragments of text, reflections, sounds as thought by people from
different countries, cultures and language areas – these all
merge to create a murmur of humanity around yearned-for
paradises.
