Bolivia (Arg 2001)</h3>
<p><img style="width: 200px; height: 154px;" class="right"
src="0607/bolivia.jpg" alt="Bolivia" align="right"> Das Thema des
illegalen Einwanderers auf der Suche nach einem besseren Leben in
einem neuen Land: Damit befasst sich Bolivia. Gleich am Anfang ein
Länderspiel Bolivien gegen Argentinien in Buenas Aires. Argentinien
gewinnt überlegen. Durch das grobkörnige Schwarzweiß des
Video-Blow-ups und die Handkamera bekommt der Film einen deutlich
dokumentarischen Anstrich. Die Figuren sind stark, und Regisseur
Israel Adrián Caetano begegnet ihnen mit Respekt. Es ist ein würdiger
zweiter Film Caetanos nach "Pizza, birra, faso", und man wird sicher
noch von dem jungen Regisseur hören. Sein aktueller Cannes Film
"Crónica de una fuga" wird sogar als Favorit für den Auslandsoscar
gehandelt.</p>
<p>Die Handlung spielt in einem billigen Fastfood-Restaurant im
malerischen Viertel Palermo Viejo von Buenos Aires. Der Besitzer, Don
Enrique (der einzige, der von einem Profischauspieler dargestellt
wird), spart Geld, indem er billig illegale Einwanderer anstellt. Die
Paraguayanerin Rosa arbeitet als Kellnerin, Freddy, der seine Familie
in Bolivien zurückgelassen hat, ist Koch. Er hat seinen Job in
Bolivien verloren, weil die Amerikaner die Kokainfelder vernichtet
haben.<br> Dem unverhohlenen Rassismus von Kunden wie Oso wird die
etwas subtilere Diskriminierung durch Don Enrique und den Taxifahrer
Marcelo gegenübergestellt. Dabei zeigt sich, wie so oft, dass die
Intoleranz sich nicht nur gegen Ausländer, sondern auch gegen
Homosexuelle und Drogenabhängige richtet. Freddy muss bald erkennen,
dass die Suche nach dem Glück in Argentinien härter ist, als er sich
das vorgestellt hat. Julián Apezteguias bewegliche Kamera beschreibt
die Figuren abwechselnd und fokussiert dabei dokumentarische Details
wie Freddys 10-Peso-Telefonanruf nach Hause (er verdient 15 Pesos am
Tag) oder die Befragung durch zwei Polizisten, die sichtlich wenig
Sympathie für Einwanderer haben. (Deborah Young)</p>
<p>Israel Adrián Caetano's Bolivia manages to both shed light on
international hardships and entertain. Shot in 16mm black and white,
it explores the experience of being poor and nonwhite in Buenos Aires,
while recalling the laconic style of Jim Jarmusch's "Stranger than
Paradise" (1984). Though set almost entirely within the confines of a
small space -- a café -- Bolivia is a refreshingly wide-open film, an
antidote to current message movies. Call it "hipster humanism."</p>

small cinema. They spend millions of dollars on rubbish movies and
then this classic is produced on a shoestring. I thought the use of
the football and boxing footage worked well, and overall it is a
fantastic film from start to finish. Having just watched Crash, it is
interesting to contrast the clichéd approach to racial tension in that
film to the delicate yet ultimately more powerful way this film deals
with the same theme. What a shame that, judging by the lack of
response to this film, not very many people have seen it. Can anyone
recommend films of this type that might be worth watching."</em> -
