Dear colleagues,

We are pleased to inform you that the United Nations / South Africa
Symposium on Basic Space Technology on the theme "Small satellite
missions for scientific and technological advancement" will be held at
the University of Cape Town in Cape Town, South Africa, from 1 to 4
September 2015.

The Symposium has been endorsed by the United Nations General Assembly
as one of the activities of the United Nations Programme on Space
Applications under the Basic Space Technology Initiative (BSTI) in 2015
(see _http://www.unoosa.org/oosa/en/SAP/sched/index.html_) and is
organized by the United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs in
cooperation with the Department of Science and Technology and the
University of Cape Town, on behalf of the Government of the Republic of
South Africa.

The Symposium will focus on capacity building in basic space technology
development, in particular the development and use of small satellites
(<150 kg) for scientific and technological advancement. It will also
discuss relevant legal and regulatory issues, including national and
international space law, frequency allocation and space debris
mitigation measures for the long-term sustainability of outer space
activities. The Symposium primarily targets experts with a technical
background involved in on-going or planned small satellite development
programmes (engineers, scientists, educators, and project and programme
managers).

Abstracts are being solicited for the following technical sessions of
the Symposium::

    · Space Technology Development and Capacity Building in Basic Space
Technology Development with a focus on Africa
    · Small Satellite Missions in Support of Key Scientific Projects and
    Questions
    · Applications of Small Satellite Missions
    · Small Satellite Missions Ground Segment
    · Small Satellite Projects for Engineering Education
    · Legal and Regulatory Issues
    · Long-term Sustainability of Outer Space Activities

Application/registration forms and the latest information on the
Symposium can be accessed from the Symposium webpage at
_http://www.unoosa.org/oosa/en/SAP/bsti/southafrica2015.html_. Within
the limited financial resources available to the co-sponsors, a number
of qualified applicants who express the need for assistance will be
offered support to attend the Symposium. This may include the provision
of a round-trip air ticket between Cape Town and the applicant’s
international airport of departure and/or room and board for the
duration of the Symposium. The deadline for receiving the applications
is 21 June 2015.
