An diesem Abend werden die beiden neu erschienenen Publikationen </SPAN><SPAN STYLE= "font-family: '';font-size: 13px;text-decoration:underline;" >Textiles: Open Letter</SPAN><SPAN STYLE= "font-family: '';font-size: 13px;" > (Sternberg Press) und </SPAN><SPAN STYLE= "font-family: '';font-size: 13px;text-decoration:underline;" >Textile Theorien der Moderne: Alois Riegl in der Kunstkritik</SPAN><SPAN STYLE= "font-family: '';font-size: 13px;" > (b_books), bei denen sie als Co-Herausgeberin fungierte, erstmals in Graz präsentiert und sind auch vor Ort im </SPAN><SPAN STYLE= "font-family: '';font-size: 13px;text-decoration:underline;" >Motto Bookshop Graz</SPAN><SPAN STYLE= "font-family: '';font-size: 13px;" > erhältlich.<BR><BR>Die verstärkte Präsenz von textilen Verfahren und Materialien, wie sie sich in den letzten Jahren im Kontext der zeitgenössischen Kunst und Ausstellungspraxis beobachten lässt, wirft eine Reihe von Fragen hinsichtlich der aktuellen wie auch historischen Rolle des Textilen auf. So scheint das Textile – und die Historie künstlerischer Bewegungen wie beispielsweise der Fiber Art – aus heutiger Sicht geradezu exemplarisch jene traditionellen Grenzziehungen zur Diskussion zu stellen, deren Ein- und Ausschlussmechanismen eine moderne Kunst(-geschichtsschreibung) wesentlich geprägt haben – seien es genderspezifische Zuschreibungen, eine Favorisierung optischer gegenüber taktilen Prinzipien, eine Hierarchie der Materialien und Medien bzw. Spaltung zwischen Diskurs und Handwerk.<BR>Während auf der einen Seite eine Neubetrachtung diverse Wechselbeziehungen zwischen den Feldern deutlich macht – insbesondere in Hinblick auf eine Ausstellungsgeschichte des Textilen – bilden die angesprochenen Gegensätze (nahezu) keine Reibungsfläche mehr für zeitgenössische Produktionen: Wie also hat sich der Blick auf das Textile verschoben? Und welche Funktion übernimmt es in zeitgenössischen künstlerischen Praktiken?<BR><BR>Rike Frank lebt und arbeitet in Berlin und Oslo. Sie ist Kuratorin für zeitgenössische Kunst und Film und lehrt als Associated Professor für Ausstellungsgeschichte, -theorie und -praxis an der Academy of Fine Art Oslo. 2012/2013 ko-kuratierte sie das Ausstellungs- und Rechercheprojekt „Textiles: Open Letter“, unter anderem „Abstraktionen, Textilien, Kunst“ (Museum Abteiberg, Mönchengladbach) und 2012 die Einzelausstellung von Friedl vom Gröller (HGB Leipzig). From a current perspective, textiles—and the history of movements like Fiber Art—are exemplary in the way they call into question the traditional boundaries of genre whose mechanisms of inclusion and exclusion have shaped modern art (history)—be it gender-specific attributions, a favoring of optical over tactile principles, a hierarchy of materials and media, or the divide between discourse and craft.<BR>While on the one hand this reappraisal highlights various interrelations between the different fields—especially with regard to textiles’ exhibition history—the above-mentioned oppositions have (almost) ceased to provide a source of tension for contemporary productions. How has the way we look at textiles shifted? And what functions do they have in contemporary artistic practice?<BR><BR>Rike Frank lives and works in Berlin and Oslo. She is a curator for contemporary art and film and an associate professor for exhibition history, theory, and practice at the Academy of Fine Arts in Oslo. In 2012/2013 she co-curated the exhibition/research project "Textiles: Open Letter," which included "Abstraktionen, Textilien, Kunst" (Museum Abteiberg, Mönchengladbach) and the 2012 solo show by Friedl vom Gröller (HGB Leipzig).
