<p>Hailing from Norway, STAER – Kristoffer Riis (guitar) / Markus Hagen (bass) / Thore Warland (drums) – are an instrumental, avant rock, power-noise trio. Sparked by the Scandinavian abstract, experimental and musique concréte scenes that traced their surroundings, their chemistry was further charged by European, American and Japanese noise-rock, improv and classical influences. The result is an impressively original manifestation of sonic alchemy. In 2010 they performed their live debut supporting Norwegian thoroughbreds Noxagt, and finally the unique and colossal sounding compositions were available to those outside of the band’s practice-floor.</p>
<p>Shortly thereafter a trip to Duper Studios in Bergen, saw delivery of their eponymous debut album via the fingers of all-star record producer Jörgen Träen. Its release in 2012 via record labels Discorporate (CD) and Gaffer (LP) was followed by a slew of heavy touring across 25 countries that saw them achieve critical acclaim in the underground press for both the album and their stunning live performances.</p>
<p>Now in 2013 STAER expand their catalogue, and minds of their audience, with their second long-player ‘Daughters’. Teaming up with Träen at Duper once more, the record was initially released on vinyl via Gaffer earlier in the year and now Horse Arm have been chosen as the home for its CD incarnation.</p>
<p>With ‘Daughters’ STAER steps it up a gear, sucking the listener into its bombinating, cacophonic void and totally enveloping them in an alien sub-reality. The experience brings to mind an expulsion into an outer-worldly floating battlefield, stretching across the vast horizon-less chasm of the Universe. At its heart two enormous dueling space-titans collide amidst the planets, hurling moons at one another, crunching their torsos across the hemispheres of Mercury and Neptune whilst emitting a constant miasma of thunderous resonance. The centrepieces of a diabolical Boschian theatre, crammed with twisted, hideous war-craft screaming, firing, exploding into and all about each other. Stars shatter and suns congeal as the dark, swirling, hypnotic cycle of the bands engulfing, polyrhythmic soundscape tracks this space-madness. Occasional Brobdingnagian lashes of swirling, scything saxophone – care of guest jazz-lord Kjetil Møster – only add to the
intoxicating atmosphere STAER create and as the music comes to a close, the band marches off leaving you trampled, ecstatic and eager for another journey back into this staggering sound recording.</p>
<p>Easily one of the best bands currently inhabiting the live underground music scene, STAER’s enactment of these albums is something to behold; a visceral pasting not to be missed.</p>
