Seit es Medien gibt, wird ihnen stets auch ein Draht ins Jenseits attestiert. Schrift, Fotografie, Tonaufnahme, <br> Filmbild – sie alle sind Platzhalter einer abwesenden Präsenz, einem vergangenen Anderswo, das im Hier und <br>Jetzt nachwirkt. Unter den gegenwärtigen Bedingungen offener und elektronisch abrufbarer Archive radikalisiert<br> sich diese Symptomatik insofern, als kaum noch ein mediales Artefakt existiert, in dem nicht ein „Geist“ <br> oder „Gespenst“ der Vergangenheit sein Unwesen treibt oder explizit beschworen wird. <br> <br>
„Hauntings“ ist ein interdisziplinäres Ausstellungsprojekt von Thomas Edlinger und Christian Höller. <br>

Angesichts der offenen, elektronischen Archive unserer Zeit radikalisiert sich dieser Verdacht, da kaum noch ein<br>
mediales Artefakt existiert, in dem nicht ein Gespenst der Vergangenheit sein Unwesen treibt. Was ist die<br> Charakteristik dieser heimlichen Anwesenheit oder unheimlichen Abwesenheit in der Gegenwartskunst? Wie<br>
zeigt sich die Faktizität des Simulacrums bzw. diese „Präsenz eines Gespensts“ (Jacques Derrida)? Von welchen
<br>Untoten wird eine Kunst heimgesucht, deren Hauptmerkmal doch der Anspruch auf Gegenwärtigkeit ist? <br>
Welche „sinistren Resonanzen“ (David Toop) sind hier am Werk? Anhand eines kleinen Querschnitts durch<br> unterschiedliche Medien soll erfahrbar werden, was alles in heutigen Kunstformen – uns verfolgend und<br> heimsuchend – nachwirkt. <br>

Seit circa fünf Jahren existiert ein weiträumiges musikalisches Feld zwischen Sampledelica und Dub Noir, <br>
das als „Hauntology“ bezeichnet wird. Gemeinsam ist den Künstler/innen dieser heterogenen Szene die Arbeit<br>
mit gespensterhaften Echos und Vintage Sounds aus der Vergangenheit, die teilweise auch als Projektion einer<br>
verlorenen Zukunft gedeutet wird. Charakteristisch ist dabei das Liebäugeln mit paranormalen (Medien-)<br>
Phänomenen deren unheimliche Nähe auf vielfältigste Weise beschworen wird. Hinzu kommen häufig ein Spiel-<br> mit Intimitäts- und Distanzeffekten sowie das Anzapfen von Referenz-Pools aus obskuren Film- und Fernseh-<br> Soundtracks. Eine musikästhetische Spurensuche, die längst nicht mehr mit dem Stichwort Retro etikettierbar ist. <br>

<b>Hauntings</b><br>
Secret and Uncanny Presence in Media, Art and Pop<br>
<br>
For as long media have been in existence, people have believed that these media maintain a special connection to<br> the beyond. Writing, photography, the sound recording, the filmic image – each one is the placeholder for an<br> absent presence, for a past- or future elsewhere whose after-effects linger in the here and now. Under the<br> current conditions of open and electronically available archives, these symptoms are growing more radical: there<br> is virtually no mediatic artefact in existence today that is not haunted by – or, even, that does not explicitly invoke <br> – a “spectre” or “ghost” from the past.<br><br>
“Hauntings” is an interdisciplinary project by Thomas Edlinger and Christian Höller. <br>

The open, electronic archives of our time radicalise this suspicion even further, as there is hardly a media artifact <br>
left that isn’t haunted by a ghost of the past. What are the characteristics of this secret presence or uncanny<br>absence in contemporary art? How is the facticity of the simulacrum, the “presence of a ghost” (Jacques Derrida) <br>
manifested? What undead beings haunt an art whose main characteristic is its claim to contemporaneity? What<br>
“sinister resonances” (David Toop) are currently at work here? Based on a small cross-section of a wide range<br>
of media, visitors can experience all the things that continue to pursue and haunt us in today’s art forms. <br>

For around five years now, the expansive field of music between Sampledelica and Dub Noir has been operating<br>
under the name of “Hauntology”. What these artists in this heterogeneous scene have in common is their work<br>
with ghostly echoes and vintage sounds from the past, sometimes interpreted as the projection of a lost future. <br>
Characteristically, they have a penchant for paranormal (media) phenomena, invoking their uncanny closeness<br>
in many different ways. In addition, they often play with effects of intimacy and distance and tap into pools of<br>
references from obscure film and television soundtracks. An exploration of music aesthetics, that has long since<br>
cast off its retro label. <br>
