music“ startet 2010</SPAN></B><SPAN style="FONT-FAMILY: Arial"> mit einem
Programm, das die Gitarre – und ihre elektronische Erweiterung – ins Zentrum der
musikalischen wie performativen Aufmerksamkeit stellt. Wie kein anderes
Instrument wurde die E-Gitarre in der zweiten Hälfte des 20. Jahrhunderts zur
revolutionären Ikone und entwickelte sich zum prototypischen Symbol des
antibürgerlichen Aufbegehrens, wurde Symbol des Underground, der Revolution und
low culture. Erst in jüngerer Zeit wurde sie auch im zeitgenössisch komponierten
Kontext präsenter. Das vorliegende Programm analysiert den ikonografischen Wert
des Instruments, seine Verwendung im Kompositionskontext, typische Aspekte der
Elektrogitarre (wie etwa Feedback) … und auch den Einsatz externer Effekte in
Relation zu Live-Elektronik. <o:p></o:p></SPAN></P>
<P style="MARGIN: 0cm 0cm 0pt" class=MsoNormal><SPAN
style="FONT-FAMILY: Arial">Das <B
style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal">E-Gitarrenquartett ZWERM</B> sieht sich
selbst an der Schnittstelle von komponierter, improvisierter, experimenteller
und performativer Musik, von high- and low-culture. Alle vier Musiker sind
klassisch ausgebildete Gitarristen (u. a. Studium bei Tom Pauwels) und heute
solistisch und in Ensembles (u. a. Champ d´Action, Collectief Reflexible,
Brussels Philharmonic) tätig. Der Schwerpunkt ihrer Arbeit liegt dabei auf
zeitgenössischer Musik. <B style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal">Stefan Prins</B>
wiederum ist Komponist und Live-Performer mit Schwerpunkt Elektronik und neue
Technologien. Er wird als Preisträger des impuls-Kompositionswettbewerbs auch
2011 wieder in Graz zu hören sein – mit einer impuls-Auftragskomposition, die
das Klangforum Wien unter Enno Poppe am 5.2.2011 uraufführen

points of a virtual square around the audience. The score is organized in a sort
of chess board with 7x7 fields. Each field contains a musical phrase which
duration is left to the discretion of the player. After finishing a phrase, the
player makes a pause of an undefined length. Then he proceeds to the next motive
and so on. <o:p></o:p></SPAN></P>

grid following the directions of the respective arrows. Each path describes a

the musician), a high speed in the chain of radically different instrumental
gestures. Another common characteristic for all the pieces, with the exception

that they would be played almost exclusively in situations in which I would be

independently related to each hand and foot of a guitarist - this piece,

musicians of the many idiossincrasies of my relation with the instrument (or,
else, eliminate them); this turned out to reflect in its extremely detailed
notation - which, thus, allowed abstract structuring procedures but,
nevertheless, derived from the intrinsic concreteness of the instrument and the
physical limitations of a performer. This way, factors that were not necessarily
relevant (or possibly detectable, due to the notation - which brings the
gestural content to the forefront) in "Serenata Arquicúbica" (such as very
detailed figurations in the left hand, with varying finger pressure, specific
harmonic-melodic content, as well as a very extreme synchronization) could, in
this quartet, "27s(pNM)", be important elements in the composition of the piece;
in it, the instrument and the interpreter have its various elements separated
and individually treated (including the use of electronics, with pedals, which
is, in fact, something which is part of the tradition of the electric guitar -
truly an electronic instrument).<o:p></o:p></SPAN></P>

constructed a dynamical musical environment in which the gesticulations of the
guitarplayer are being “distorted” in several gradations by the
live-electronics. When, two years after Not I, the exciting new e-guitarquartet
“Zwerm” asked me to write a new piece for them, I wanted to take this
deconstruction yet one step further. In Infiltrationen the guitar is considered
as a horizontal open circuit of 6 strings, an acoustical work-bench on which the
guitarists can perform their actions using all kinds of objects. This
“tradition” of “table-top-guitarism” has gained importance since such musicians
as Keith Rowe and Fred Frith started their guitar-experiments in the seventies,
and it served as a starting point for this composition. <o:p></o:p></SPAN></P>

feedback-techniques in which several signals infiltrate eachother) and a
live-electronics part performed on a homemade digital instrument by a fifth
musician.<o:p></o:p></SPAN></P>

infiltrations of technology and technology-based decisionmaking on human
(inter)action and vice versa – a subject that is very important to me, not only
in a musical context. In Infiltrationen the “score” is being generated in
real-time on computerscreens – every performer has a laptop in front of him.
Whenever a performer wants a new playing-instruction he hits the spacebar of his
laptop, and since the computers are connected to eachother through a network,
the change made on one computer immediately has consequences for the playing
instructions on all the other computers. Although a clear musical evolution has
been preprogrammed on a macro-temporal level in these playing-instructions, the
performers (almost) never know in advance which will be the next instruction.
This makes the musicians masters and servants of the technology at the same
time. <o:p></o:p></SPAN></P>
