Trotz ihres schmalen Oeuvres wurde sie zu einer der wichtigsten und zentralsten Persönlichkeiten der Avantgarde Filmbewegung in der USA. Film, Tanz, Texte, Filmtheorie beschäftigten sie so sehr, dass sie den amerikanischen Avantgarde-Film nach 1945 - zusammen mit Kenneth Anger, Jonas Mekas, Stan Brakhage<span style="mso-spacerun: yes"> </span>begründet und starken Einfluss auf den Feministischen Film nimmt; vor ihren Filmvorführungen verteilte sie Handzettel und Gebrauchsanweisungen und bestand darauf, zuerst über die Filme zu sprechen und sie dann zu zeigen; <i>"</i><i>mein Schwerpunkt ist die bewusste Kontrolle der Form, ganz im Gegensatz zur surrealistischen Ästhetik der Spontaneität</i><i>".</i> </span></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align:justify"><i>"</i><i>Ihre Filme entstehen aus einer offenbar persönlichen Erlebnissphäre, sie setzen einander fort und komplettieren sich wie eine einzige Traumfolge.
